Breast Augmentation Los Angeles

The breasts are one of the focal points of a woman’s femininity and ultimately define their sexuality, adding to the body’s overall balance and beauty. Not all women are blessed with having perfectly symmetrical, volumized breast, and often times this can be a source of psychological discomfort and may even detract from a woman’s confidence levels. A solution for attaining fuller, more symmetric breasts is a breast augmentation. Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon, Glenn Vallecillos, MD, has over 15 years of experience in breast augmentation surgery, having performed thousands of procedures.

Breast Augmentation Overview

Dr. Vallecillos, on breast augmentation surgery: ” The decision to undergo a breast augmentation is a very personal one because of the very nature of the permanence of the procedure. During a breast augmentation consultation, I like to spend a lot of time with my clients going over all the details of the surgery and aftercare including the expectations, native asymmetries, proper after care massaging techniques, and much much more. In terms of the breast size, I prefer to select implants which are best suited for a patient’s particular physique, and there are systematic ways of determining what size and shape breast implants will look best on your body. Its a definitely a blend of science and preference. Its my job as your plastic surgeon to give you the best possible advice so that you may make the most informed decisions possible in order to achieve your breast augmentation goals. I look forward to partnering with you on this journey … “.

Breast augmentation surgery is an aesthetic surgical enhancement of the breasts whereby either saline or silicone implants are placed under the breast tissue.  The result is an increase in breast volume and projection.

Procedure Walk Through

  1. Preparation: Prior to breast augmentation surgery, patients are instructed to discontinue a number of medications including blood-thinners and medications that may affect normal blood clotting. Additionally, smoking is contraindicated a minimum of two weeks prior to your procedure. Patients over the age of 45 must undergo a medical clearance by their personal physician. If the don’t have a personal physician, our practice can refer one to you. Lastly, a mammogram may also recommend prior to your surgery – this will be dependent on your age and whether you have a history of breast cancer.
  2. Anesthesia: Breast augmentation surgery is most commonly performed under a general anesthetic.
  3. There are several methods that can be used for breast augmentation, mostly differentiated by the placement of the incisions and the material of the implants.  The most popular breast augmentation procedures are as follows:

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, the amount of which determines the shape and firmness of the post-surgical breast.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with an elastic gel, which feels akin to natural breast tissue.

Inframammary Incision

In this approach, the surgeon will make an incision at the base of the breast. This is the preferred approach by Doctor Vallecillos for breast augmentation. The rationale behind this will be discussed in detail during the consultation.

Tranaxillary Incision

A transaxillary incision allows the surgeon to enter the breast from the armpit, eliminating the risk of a visible scar on the breast.

Periareolar Incision

With this method, an incision around the areola is made.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon will create a pocket in the breast for the implant. The implant may be placed either beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular), or behind the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle (submammary/subglandular).

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery ?

Breast augmentation surgery may be a reasonable option for you if you would like to enhance the shape and volume of your breasts, or if you’ve recently given birth and are suffering from postpartum breast volume loss.

How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation surgery ?

Typically following breast augmentation surgery, patients will need at least some assistance for a few days. The patient will be required to wear a post-surgical compression bra for one month.  Also, lifting objects greater than ten pounds and engaging in heavy exercise is discouraged for one month.

What are the most common risks and side effects from breast augmentation ?

Complications from breast augmentation surgery are rare, but can include scarring, bleeding, infection, and loss of sensation in the nipple or breast. Capsular contracture, or the hardening of the tissue and skin around the implant, can occur and would require additional surgery to correct.

Are breast augmentation results permanent ?

Although breast implants typically yield long-term results, it is important to understand that over time, changes in your breasts may make later procedures necessary. While it is rare, implants can leak and sometimes require replacement. Women who receive large implants may later need a breast lift to reduce drooping. Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon are an important part of your post-procedural routine.
