Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) is an injectable filler made of small calcium-based microspheres in a water-based gel that both immediately restores facial volume and encourages the production of collagen over time. As we age, the body’s natural production of collagen will decrease, leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness in the skin. This is especially noticeable in the face, where skin can sag and wrinkles, lines, and creases can appear. When injected into the skin, Radiesse fills wrinkles and stimulates the natural production of collagen, creating a firmer and more supple appearance.
Procedure Walk-Through
- Preparation: You should stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that act as blood thinners for several weeks prior to your appointment. This will minimize bruising and bleeding from the procedure. No skin sensitivity testing is required before beginning treatment.
- Anesthesia: Although anesthesia is not necessary, the injected mixture contains lidocaine, a numbing agent that will minimize patient discomfort during the procedure.
- Radiesse will be administered using a very fine needle to the area(s) of the face that require treatment, usually for moderate to severe lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth, and chin. Radiesse can dramatically improve the appearance of wrinkled skin, filling and firming the face and stimulating the production of collagen for a healthy, youthful complexion.
While results are long-lasting, they are not permanent. The calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres will naturally break down into calcium and phosphate ions, which the body then naturally metabolizes. At this point, a new round of treatment will be necessary to maintain results.
