What is Renuvion J-Plasma?

J-Plasma, or Renuvion, is a nonsurgical procedure with the sole purpose of tightening loose skin using radio frequency generator to create a precise stream of cold Helium plasma energy. It is the only device with FDA clearance for soft-tissue contraction ( skin tightening ).  While J Plasma is commonly tied to being a “ non-surgical “ facelift, it is able to address a soft-tissue laxity or loose skin on virtually  any part of the body.

Benefits of Renuvion J Plasma

For patients seeking to address mild to moderate skin laxity, J-plasma is the definitive option. It’s versatility allows for soft-tissue tightening on various areas of the body. Additionally, the J-Plasma procedure may be performed with or without liposuction. This makes the procedure ideal for patients who are thin and do not have fat to remove, yet suffer from skin or soft-tissue laxity.

J-Plasma also has the potential to significantly alleviate other skin concerns such as cellulite. J-Plasma can reduce the appearance of cellulite by “ironing out“ skin depressions. This is accomplished by connective tissue contraction over surrounding areas of fat, making cellulite less obvious.

Renuvion procedures are excellent for addressing loose skin on the sides and back of the upper legs, especially when used with liposuction.

Renuvion, also known as J Plasma, offers several benefits.  These include:

  • Minimal downtime
  • Minimally invasive
  • Smoother skin
  • Improved cellulite
  • Enhanced, unparalleled skin tightening
  • Enhanced, more precise results
  • Versatility in treatment areas
  • Results seen as early as first post-operative day

During the Procedure

  • Anesthesia: Renuvion J Plasma is typically performed under a general anesthetic for larger cases, although smaller cases may be performed under a local anesthetic with sedation.
  • Duration:  1 hour and up
  • Target Areas:  Abdomen, arms, back, calves, flanks, hips, thighs, and submentum
  • Device:  Renuvion J Plasma radio frequency generator with Helium plasma source.

    Step-by-step guide:

    • Prior to procedure, the selected anesthetic method is deployed.
    • Tumescent fluid ( local anesthetic ) is injected into the areas of interest and the numbing agent is allowed to take effect for 20 minutes. Blood vessels also shrink during this process which reduces bleeding and bruising.
    • If performed in conjunction with liposuction, the liposuction is first performed prior to introducing the soft-tissue tightening.
    • Next, through hidden keyhole incisions, the Renuvion J Plasma hand-piece is passed radially through the treatment areas, transmitting Helium plasma that contracts regional connective tissue without harming surrounding tissue, until technical endpoints are reached.
    • Once the tissue is adequately treated, residual fluid and Helium as removed with traditional liposuction techniques.
    • The result is a substantial improvement in contour with enhanced skin and soft-tissue tightening and a smooth appearance.  Once healed, the overlying skin will be noticeably tighter. This may take several months to appreciate.
    • Lastly a specialized compression garment is applied to assist with swelling and body contouring.  The garment is worn for 6 weeks in most instances.

    Aftercare & Recovery

    • Downtime:  5-10 days
    • Common side effects:  Mild bruising, mild to modest swelling, minimal pain.
    • Duration of side effects:  Majority of swelling gone at 2 weeks. All swelling gone by 4 months.

      Similar & Related Procedures

Renuvion J-Plasma is a minimally invasive procedure designed to tighten mild to moderate skin and/or soft-tissue laxity.  The procedure is FDA cleared for contraction of connective tissue, treatment of neck laxity and facial renewal procedures.  Additionally, J Plasma is the only device FDA cleared to provide soft-tissue contraction following liposuction, thus making it a truly novel technology.

While it uses the same incisions to that of Vaser liposuction and Bodytite, the procedure is not designed to disrupt and remove unwanted fat.  However, as mentioned above, the procedure may be performed in conjunction with liposuction. J-Plasma and liposuction combine excellently to remove fat and tighten the skin in one surgery.  In fact, the vast majority of cases performed by Doctor Vallecillos with J Plasma involves primary removing unwanted adipose tissue with Vaser assisted liposuction.  The two procedures pair well together to create a comprehensive transformation.

Bodytite is another procedure that works well at contracting skin and soft-tissue, similar to Renuvion J Plasma.  Bodytite, through RFAL or Radio-Frequency Assisted Lipolysis, has the capability of breaking up fat tissue, much like Vaser, although Bodytite is not as efficient as Vaser liposuction for this purpose

During the consultation and evaluation with Doctor Vallecillos, a decision will be made as to which combination of soft-tissue tightening technologies is best suited for your particular needs and desired outcome.  Below, find a table comparing the capabilities of J Plasma, Vaser liposuction and Bodytite:

      Renuvion J Plasma FAQs

      What is J-Plasma?

Renuvion J Plasma is a transformational minimally invasive skin and soft-tissue tightening treatment, often used in combination with Vaser liposuction to remove unwanted fat and tighten skin, all in one combined procedure.  The device harnesses cold Helium plasma, generated through a radio frequency conductor.  It is able to treat all areas of the body including the under chin area.

What is the difference between J-plasma and Renuvion?

The Renuvion  and  J Plasma names are used interchangeably, and represent the treatment modality.  Apyx Medical is the name of the company that makes the device.  Renuvion J Plasma has skin tightening capabilities which is executed through small keyhole incisions and performed as a minimally invasive procedure.  Renuvion J Plasma also has capabilities of reducing moderate to severe wrinkles and rhytids in skin Types I – III.  This procedure is performed with a special dermal hand piece with skin resurfacing capabilities.

      How does J-plasma work?

J Plasma utilizes a radio frequency generator which heats Helium to a plasma state.  The Helium plasma, when exposed to surrounding connective tissue underneath the skin, causes immediate soft-tissue contraction, and also stimulates the production of new, organized collagen, which acts to further tighten the skin and soft-tissue over time.

      Is J-Plasma FDA approved?

      • Yes.  J Plasma is FDA clearance for the following:
        • As a resurficing device for the treatment of moderate to severe facial rhytids in skin types I – III
        • For use in for the management of skin and/or soft-tissue contraction
        • For treatment of skin/soft-tissue laxity in combination with a liposuction procedure.

Is J plasma better than liposuction?

J Plasma is completely different than liposuction.  J Plasma is used to tighten skin and soft tissue through contraction of the underlying connective tissue.  The purpose of liposuction is to extract unwanted fat in various areas of the body.

Is J plasma better than a tummy tuck?

J Plasma and tummy tucks address different objectives.  J Plasma produces excellent tightening in patients with mild to moderate soft-tissue laxity.  Tummy tucks, conversely, typically tighten the underlying musculature through a diastasis repair and well are removes redundant skin.  People who require conventional tummy tucks normally have a significant amount of skin excess, far exceeding the capabilities of what J Plasma can treat effectively.

How long does it take for skin to tighten after J plasma?

Immediate skin tightening is seen with a J Plasma procedure.  This is due to the effect of on contact contraction of the connective tissue.  Over time, additional tightening is seen as new collagen formation is induced by the treatment.  This secondary skin tightening typically is not appreciated until the 4 month mark after the Renuvion J Plasma treatment.

      What is J-Plasma for?

Renuvion J Plasma is intended for the tightening of skin and soft tissue found in the neck and other areas of the body.  J Plasma can also be used to resurface skin with moderate to severe skin wrinkles or rhytids.

Can J-Plasma be done without lipo?

Yes.  In patients that have skin or soft-tissue laxity but do not have adipose tissue that needs removing, the Renuvion J Plasma may be performed without liposuction.

      How painful is J-Plasma?

All people have different thresholds for pain, however, most people who undergo Renuvion J Plasma admit to mild to moderate discomfort for a few days which is easily managed by Extra Strength Tylenol in the vast majority of the cases.

      Does J-Plasma really work?

In short, yes.  J Plasma does an excellent job at tightening skin and soft tissue in people with mild to moderate skin laxity.

      Does J-Plasma burn fat?

J Plasma is not designed or intended to burn fat but rather to  tighten skin and soft tissue.  Devices such as Vaser liposuction and Bodytite provide lipolysis or fat dissolving capabilities and are first line treatments for this purpose.

      Is J-Plasma worth getting?

J Plasma is the first-line gold standard treatment for tightening skin and soft tissue in patients with mild to moderate soft-tissue laxity, producing unparalleled results compared to other minimally-invasive options. The decision to get any elective treatment is definitively up to the patient; hence, it is up to the patient to do their due diligence to see if any procedure is right for them or “worth it“ to them.

      What does J-Plasma feel like?

Patients who undergo J plasma typically feel mild pain following the procedure, as well as a sensation of skin tightness in the area that was treated. Additionally, there may be an element of skin numbness for a few weeks to a few months until all sensory nerves have grown back.

      Does J-Plasma help stretch marks?

Yes. The Renuvion Dermal Handpiece is utilized  for the treatment of moderate to severe wrinkles and rhytides, and is additionally able to treat stretch marks in patients with a Fitzpatrick Score of I to III.

Can J-Plasma get rid of cellulite?

Renuvion J Plasma is able to significant improve cellulite by contracting connective tissue in areas surrounding the cellulite, hence making the cellulite dimples much less obvious.  When combined with treatments such as Aveli in combination with fat transfer or with Sculptra, excellent results can be achieved.

      Should I get J-Plasma lipo?

If you suffer from adiposity or localized areas of excess fat in combination with less than ideal skin, tone, Vaser liposuction combined with J plasma may be an option to solve both problems in one surgery. Consult with Dr. Vallecillos to find out if this combination treatment is right for you.

      Is J-Plasma necessary?

Renuvion J plasma is not “necessary” but provides an excellent minimally-invasive management option of mild to moderate skin laxity in people wanting to tighten their skin and attain a more youthful appearance.

How long does it take to recover from J-Plasma?

Recovery from J plasma:  Depends on the number of factors. If you are getting J plasma to tighten the skin on the underside of the chin, this downtime is fairly minimal and recovery is usually well less than a week. However, if you are getting J plasma in combination with Vaser liposuction, the healing tends to be a little bit longer and a full recovery may take one week to several weeks.

Is BodyTite the same as J-Plasma?

BodyTite and J Plasma are not the same.   Although both treatments use a radio frequency generator, in the case of Bodytite, that generator produces the heat responsible for the lipolysis ( fat burning ) in addition to soft tissue contraction. Therefore, Bodytite is able to perform both fat reduction as well as skin tightening in a single session. Conversely, Renuvion J Plasma  Is intended for the sole purpose of tightening skin and soft tissue.  It uses a radio frequency generator to heat helium to a cold plasma state which contracts connective tissue upon contact through conductive tissue heating.   J Plasma is much more efficient at contracting soft tissue and is able to treat an area in seconds compared to body type which takes several times longer and up to 30 minutes per session.

Is J plasma the same as Renuvion?

Yes.  J Plasma and Renuvion both constitute the same soft-tissue contraction treatment, and their names tend to be used interchangeably.
