Hottest Trend in Plastic Surgery No BUTTs About it!
Since 2014, the fastest growing trend in plastic surgery has been butt implants and butt-enhancing procedures. In 2000, these procedures were so rare that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) did not even track them. When 2014 witnessed 1,863 butt implant procedures, and 2015 saw 2,540, the industry sat up on its newly rounded derriere and took notice.
When you include other booty-enhancing procedures, the numbers are even more impressive. The ASPS tracked nearly 15,000 Brazilian butt lift procedures in 2015 (also known as buttock augmentation using fat grafting), and another 4,800 traditional butt lifts. According to the ASPS, this equates to one buttock-enhancing procedure performed every 30 minutes, every day.
One thing is obvious: the tush is the new body part of choice for cosmetic enhancement. What brought about this sudden rise in popularity?
The Popularity Increase
Plastic surgery in general has enjoyed increased popularity in recent years, with surgeons performing 15.9 million cosmetic procedures in 2015, a 2 percent increase over 2014. Some of this increase owes to a combination of increased availability and affordability, but not all of it. Perhaps the greatest contributor to this increase is the number of people opting for “nontraditional” procedures, such as butt implants.
Industry insiders, including E! Network’s Dr. Terry Dubrow, attribute the increase to the Kardashian Effect, noting that a significant portion of patients seeking derriere-enhancing procedures specifically request a rear like Kim Kardashian’s. Other famous tushes frequently requested include those of Nicki Minaj, Sofia Vergara, and Jennifer Lopez. Obviously, celebrities can sell anything, even the desire for larger, rounder bottoms.
The Procedures
As the name implies, a butt implant procedure involves an implant directly in the buttocks, on top of the underlying muscles. These soft implants, composed of solid silicone, add shape and firmness to the rear. Patients appreciate their new shapely silhouette.
Despite the exploding popularity of butt implants, the Brazilian butt lift is by far the most popular form of gluteoplasty (commonly called a butt lift). The traditional butt lift minimizes the buttocks, but the Brazilian augments them, using fat grafted from other areas of the body via liposuction. The most popular donation sites are the abdomen and thighs, which serves a double purpose by further enhancing the patient’s new shape. Another reason for its popularity is the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, especially compared to butt implants.
