Fix the Eyebrow Divot
What is an eyebrow divot?
Faces inevitably change as people age, and unfortunately these changes can seem to accelerate the process. As the face begins to sag and droop, many find that new lines, wrinkles, and indentations begin to form and take hold. One of these common signs is the eyebrow divot, an indentation that gradually develops and deepens between the eyebrows. Typically described as the ‘11’s’ because of their vertical formation between the brows, this divot is the eventual result of facial movements such as squinting, frowning, or furrowing of the eyebrows. As the eyebrow muscles reposition in a downwards and inwards direction, the skin contracts to the bone at the top of the nose. The result is a scowled or angry appearance with eyebrows pulled inwards.
When left untreated for years, these wrinkles eventually deepen into indentations between the brows. They go from dynamic wrinkles visible only when emoting to static wrinkles seen even when one’s face is at rest. If you do not treat these imprinted wrinkles for a long period of time, then these eventually become so deep that it creates the eyebrow divot.
Treatment for Eyebrow Divots
It is important to treat these wrinkles as early as possible to prevent the deepening and formation of the divots themselves. Once the wrinkles have settled into the relaxed face, they are more difficult to treat. However, it is very possible to smoothen these wrinkles and prevent them from worsening if treatment is started sooner rather than later.
Experts typically treat these eyebrow divots with Botox, a neurotoxin that blocks neurotransmitters between nerve endings and muscle receptors. Such a treatment temporarily freezes the muscles to make movement in the targeted areas. Thus, frowning and squinting is less possible to prevent the deepening of the eyebrow divot. Xeomin and Dysport are also other neurotoxin injectables formulated specifically to improve moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Dysport is special in that improvements are seen within 3 days after a 20 minute treatment with long lasting results. Typically, these injections can take up to two weeks to see the full results, but if the lines are still deep then a follow up may be necessary and beneficial to properly addressing your 11 lines.
Once the divots have actually developed, then a combination of Botox and dermal fillers is necessary to reverse the effects. These injectable fillers add volume to severe wrinkles and folds to smooth them over for up to two years. Combined with Botox, the divots can be smoothed in appearance and your face frozen to prevent the rapid undoing of the work by pushing the filler out of its position.
The ideal filler in this case is Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite dermal filler used for smoothing moderate to severe wrinkles and folds by correcting volume loss. Radiesse is unique in this ingredient to give immediate, natural looking results that can last for up to a year or more for many patients. The procedure is a quick injection under the skin that can be done within an hour and smooth out wrinkles upon injection.
Benefits
Smoothing out the wrinkles between the eyebrows is a simple and effective way of reversing aging of the face as a whole. By addressing these lines before they deepen and develop further, patients can see excellent results with a more youthful looking face structure. Moreso, the treatments available are quick and non-invasive, so patients can expect to see rapid results with minimal downtime.
Cost and Pricing
Botox and other injectables for addressing deep scowl lines around the eyebrows typically costs around $600-$800 since the treatment area is so small. However, these are mainly preventative treatments that prevent the deepening of lines, but will not reverse the effects already seen. For filler, Radiesse injections typically cost about $1,000 for treatment, depending on how many syringes are used to address the volume loss.
Am I a good candidate?
Patients seeking to address scowl lines of any severity around their eyebrows can see great benefits with treatment, especially since the treatment spectrum is quite vast. Thus, if you are looking for a quick fix to smooth out the appearance and prevent further indentation, botox or similar injectables are a great option. For someone looking to correct more severe volume loss, fillers are also a great option that will easily provide the desired results. Treatment thus is highly customizable based on the patient’s needs.
Risks and Side Effects
Common side effects include bruising, welling, redness or mild pain at the injection site, but these are temporary and subside fairly quickly. Even more, there is no downtime with the procedure so patients can go right back to work after their appointment
